Routing in manufacturing, the series of steps starting from when a Production Order is placed until it comes out as a finished item, are very important. The Production Order shows all the tasks, materials, resources and equipment that will be used to manufacture a product.
Workcenter is an important concept in the context of manufacturing. It means a tool, machine or other production facility or the manual resource that will be made use of to perform a specified task. If it is a machine or equipment, we need to know its capacity. Setup and breakdown time must be known so that the correct time is allocated to the overall estimated duration of the Production Order.
Essentially, a Routing is a collection of operations or routing tasks to be performed in a defined order, that will pass through one or more workcenters, consuming material, labour and other resources. A task may or may not have an identifiable end-product or ‘deliverable product’, which goes into the next operation/task. If the same material input at the beginning of a Production Order is subjected to various tasks, till it becomes a finished product in the end, individual tasks may not have an identifiable deliverable product associated with them.
Based on the complexity of the manufacturing process, several Routing Tasks may have to be created. These tasks should be periodically reviewed and updated to reflect changes in product specifications, production process etc.
