A Facility is a place where materials – raw materials, semi-finished goods, finished goods etc.- are received from suppliers or own facilities and issued to customers or for internal use in production. These could be warehouses or shop-floor storage areas or any place where stocks are kept and need to be tracked. Even a scrapyard can be called a Facility if it keeps valuable scrap.

A Facility can be any of the following: a warehouse, building or a floor or room in that building, a plant or any store or a call-center/customer care center.

Facilities can be hierarchical, allowing you to define specific areas, aisles, bins etc. for close monitoring and control. The biggest problem that can crop up in a warehouse is looking for an item in the wrong place or not finding an item where it should have been, though available in stock in the system. Careful warehouse planning can take care of such situations to a good extent.
