MRP essentially supports Make to Order and Make to Stock business models

In the case of Make to Order, the business does not keep stocks of its products, instead manufactures them against confirmed customer orders.

In the case of Make to Stock or Stock-and-Sell model, the business maintains stocks of products ready for sale. In such cases, it may also maintain minimum stock levels for some or all of the products.
