CREST ERP supports management of discrete, repetitive manufacturing operations. Central to any production management software are the capabilities to work with structured Bill of Materials (BOM), Material Requirements Planning (MRP), Production orders/work orders, Work center planning, proper Routing of production tasks and Cost Management.

Discrete manufacturing is an industry term for the manufacturing of finished products that are distinct items capable of being easily counted, touched or seen. It involves parts and systems like nuts and bolts, brackets, wires, assemblies and individual products. It uses complex, layered BOMs while process manufacturing uses multiple recipes and formulas. Discrete manufacturing can be reversed, while process manufacturing cannot be. Discrete manufacturers make finished goods out of components that can be taken apart and used in another product.

In discrete manufacturing, several work orders could exist in the system in various stages of completion. A production run can be stopped or suspended, without shutting down an entire production line. On the contrary, in continuous process industries, a line can run only one process job at a time. A job cannot be interrupted before completion, without causing production losses. There will be one main product and perhaps one or more byproducts or joint products.
