Introduction
When opening the ‘Water Area’ lifeguards are to ensure that there are two lifeguards on duty and that the following procedures are adhered to.
Opening Procedure
Both lifeguards before start time:
- Collect Key ‘4’ from the key watcher box and keep in the First Aid Room during shift after set up.
- Wipe down the First Aid Room with the cleaning items that have been supplied and following the cleaning tips and guidelines memo.
- Check the ‘C’ size oxygen cylinder, the yellow pelican case (oxygen, first aid), 2 x defibrillator (soft pack, yellow pelican case), all located in the First Aid Room.
- Take the red soft pack, yellow pelican case, rescue board and pool scoop from the First Aid Room, place yellow case under Main Tower and the soft pack at top of Busker’s Pitch stairs ready to go in buggy on arrival. Place the rescue board and tube on the water’s edge.
When opening the ‘Water Area’ lifeguards are to ensure that there is one lifeguard at the Main Tower at all times. One lifeguard is to complete the following tasks while the other lifeguard stays at the Main Tower and maintains observation on the water area.
One lifeguard (lifeguard with open or provisional Red P or Green P) is to:
- Proceed to the lifeguard buggy storage area; unplug the buggy from the power point ensuring the power is turned off. Wipe down the buggy with the cleaning supplies, (including the steering wheel and the seats.). Bring the buggy to Main Lagoon. Carry rescue board stand down to Main Tower, load checked soft pack into back of buggy.
- Perform pre-operational checks on first aid buggy (See LGS SB 3.5 Lifeguard Buggy Procedure).
Lifeguard 9 or another Lifeguard is to:
- Check the first aid triage draw located under to the bed in the First Aid Room.
- Ensure the general cleanliness of the First Aid Room. If the First Aid Room hasn’t been cleaned, follow the cleaning tips and guidelines memo to make sure the cleaning is done.
- Travel around all the pools, changing the signs from ‘Off Duty’ to ‘On Duty’ (key is located on set ‘4’). Two (2) rescue tubes, located in North and South Tower, are to be taken out of towers and placed at the appropriate towers able to be easily accessed while travelling around the ‘Water Area’. The Lifeguard Towers at the northern and southern ends of the Main Pool as well as the Lifeguard Tower located at the northern end of the Boat Pool are to be unlocked and, where appropriate, secured. Lifeguards are to identify any hazards, destruction of property or litter and report to control if needed.
- Use Key 4 to unlock Boat pool tower and retrieve the spinal board and relocate to under Main Tower.
- Move the three (3) ‘Pool Unattended, Lifeguards off Duty’ signs from Main Beach and place them neatly away in the back of the Main Tower.
- The two (2) ‘Pool Unattended, Lifeguards off Duty’ signs from Boat Pool (one at the pontoon on the Main Pool Side and one at the beginning of the Boat Pool ramp) are to be changed to the other side of the sign to say ‘Pool Operating at Low Patronage Mode’’.
- Two (2) ‘Pool Unattended, Lifeguards off Duty’ signs from Aquativity (one on the Brisbane River side and one on the cement near the big fig tree) are to be changed around to ‘Pool Operating at Low Patronage Mode’ side.
- If a lifeguard is on duty at the Boat Pool or Aquativity later in the day (for example lifeguards are to be on duty at the Boat Pool and Aquativity between 10am and 4pm in August), lifeguards are to return the signs to either behind the Aquativity Toilets or behind the Boat Pool Tower respectively (not to the side of the tower this damages the signs). When the lifeguards leave the pool unattended, they must return signs back out on pool deck on the ‘Pool Operating at Low Patronage Mode’ side.
- Pool scoops to be put out around the pools as per LGS SB 3.4 Placement of Lifesaving Equipment.
- Lifeguard 9 to complete the Lifeguard 9 Beach Management Checklist on Ipad and return Key 4 to First Aid Room.
- Lifeguard 9 to sign on Lifeguard Streets Beach patrol and complete stats when required on LIMSOC.
