Purpose
The below procedures are to be completed within 15 minutes of from the completion shift. Lifeguards are to maintain constant surveillance throughout this process. When at a multiple Lifeguard location one Lifeguard must maintain constant surveillance from the Lifeguard hut or fixed location.
Procedure
The public perceives that the beach is being fully patrolled until the Red and Yellow flags are removed. For this reason the Red and Yellow flags should be the first item put away. Maintain surveillance as best possible during the closing down procedures. When at a multiple Lifeguard location one Lifeguard must maintain constant surveillance from the Lifeguard tower or fixed location. The following order of procedures must be followed for the completion of the shift.
- Never leave your location prior to your shift completion time
- Sweep out any sand and clean any rubbish from Lifeguard tower
- Always notify the beach users by public address that the patrol is closing down. Refer to the example at the bottom of the page
- Complete all necessary paperwork leave any necessary messages for the following day.
- Remove flags
- Remove signage
- Retrieve rescue equipment
- Wash down / flush Jet Ski and ATV / 4WD thoroughly and spray with the supplied lubricants/ water dispersant.
- Store all equipment in appropriate storage location (refer to specific beach operations guide)
- Place all communications equipment (phone and radio) back on charge
- Ensure all towers and storage rooms are locked
- Log off with LIMSOC
- Return keys as required.
Example:
“Attention all beach users. Please be advised that the Lifeguard Service will be closing the beach over the next 10 minutes. Once the Red and Yellow flags are removed their will no longer be any Lifeguards on duty. Swimming is not recommended after this time. Tragedies do occur on unpatrolled beaches. This beach will reopen tomorrow morning at 7:30am. Thank you, have a nice evening.”
