Riverway Precinct

Riverway was conceived by Thuringowa City Council as a standard of ecological sensitivity and river management, while simultaneously providing an exciting environment for the city’s young and expanding community to enjoy a variety of water-based and waterfront activities.

Riverway stretches along 11km of the Ross River covering four unique precincts, including the swimming lagoons, skate park, picnic areas and Tony Ireland Stadium.

Riverway Lagoons

The Riverway Lagoons are filtered chlorinated fresh water that cover an area in size of more than three Olympic swimming pools. The lagoons are nestled among shady raintrees, with the Ross River providing a backdrop.

The upper lagoon is designed for more formal uses, including an area for swimming laps and specific areas for disabled and elderly access, with handrails and suitable water levels. Depth varies up to 2m.

The lower lagoon has a softer shape, and is surrounded by timber decks, rockery and a concrete beach at the toddler pool. It is an ideal place for children to play in shallow water while under direct adult supervision. Depth varies up to 1.8m.

A favourite with all demographics, the lagoons are one of Townsville’s best loved and most recognised attractions. A large number of people visit the Lagoon each year to enjoy climate and recreational pleasures.
