Purpose
This procedure outlines what the best process is if Lifeguards are not sure if a person needs assistance.
Procedure
IF IN DOUBT GO OUT!
Recognition of people in distress is a fundamental skill for the professional Lifeguard. Lifeguards must be able to quickly identify if or when a person may be in distress and require assistance.
Take particular notice of people that may be
- overweight
- elderly
- small unsupervised children
- unhealthy
- of foreign appearance
- displaying poor swimming ability
- under the influence of drugs or alcohol
A well-trained alert proactive Lifeguard will usually identify these people quickly and prevent a rescue having to be performed. Prevention by using the public address system or utilizing the Lifeguards present on the beach to inform the beach users of the hazards is highly recommended.
If in doubt go out! Rescues can be performed by utilizing the most appropriate piece of equipment for the situation. Always take rescue equipment with you when performing a rescue.
Before performing a rescue, a nearby Lifeguard must be notified in case back up is required.
If you suspect a person is or may be about to be in distress or require assistance always investigate it. Don’t be afraid to get wet. It looks better for a lifeguard to check on a person, as it looks like Lifeguards have been proactive rather than reactive.
