EMERGENCY PROCEDURES FOR AREA WARDENS
If notified or having become aware of a potential emergency in your area:
- Collect yellow Area Warden hat, radio or communication equipment where applicable and checklists.
- If safe to do so (and if time and severity of emergency allows) inspect the potential emergency and inform the Chief Warden of the location and nature of the situation. If the Chief Warden is not available contact the Deputy Chief Warden.
- Contact the Chief Warden to determine the nature of the emergency prior to going to the assembly area.
- Follow all instructions given by the Chief Warden.
- Organise for a Deputy Area Warden for each top and lower lagoons to search the entire area for signs of fire, smoke or any other emergency. The Area Warden should ensure all occupants are aware of the threat, or implement the emergency evacuation procedure for their area, as directed by Chief Warden.
- If the situation is deemed to require evacuation commence evacuation procedures – guide general occupants to the closest, safe emergency exit then to the designated assembly area. In the event of fire, close doors to slow the progress of the fire and spread of smoke.
- If safe to do so, direct a staff member (preferably a Deputy Area Warden) to act as an Inspection Officer and check area for abnormal situations and ensure all blind passages, toilets and storage rooms have been searched and no occupants remain.
- Ensure that essential records and monies are safeguarded, without risk to life, during times of emergency evacuation or during evacuation practices.
- Where appropriate, nominate staff to supervise areas to prevent any person from entering or re-entering the building. Staff nominated to perform this function are to position themselves as close to the areas as possible while ensuring that they are not at risk.
- Evacuate all personnel in your area to the assembly area, ensuring assistance is provided for visitors and persons with special needs.
- Meet occupants at the designated assembly area and remain with the group. DO NOT allow anyone to re-enter the danger zone until the appropriate authorities advise it is safe to do so.
- Perform a roll call at the assembly area using the Deputy roster as a guide only.
- Inform the Chief Warden when evacuation of the area is complete and of any missing persons/remaining occupants or mobility impaired occupants.
- Once the Chief Warden has been notified by the relevant emergency services that the emergency is over, the Chief Warden or his/her delegate will state: “The emergency has been declared over, please resume normal duties”.
- Upon hearing this directive, convey the message to the people in your area and advise them to return to their workplace and continue with their normal duties.
- Any difficulties experienced during the evacuation should be listed and given to the Chief Warden so that the debrief meeting agenda may be set down.
- Notification of the debrief meeting will be given as soon as possible after the evacuation.
