Introduction
History and experience tell us that one of the best preventive actions we can take in adverse conditions is to close the beach and advise swimmers that there is a much safer and more enjoyable patrolled beach at Cylinder Beach or Adder Rock (in Summer School Holidays)
Policy
The following procedure is to be adhered to when closing Main beach.
Procedure
Once the decision has been made to close the beach the following procedure is to be adhered to. The lifeguard is to:
- Update all beach closed report signs, advise why beach is closed as well as tides, winds, water temp and lifeguards on duty.
- Place a danger no swimming sign and a beach closed report sign at the top of the stairs to the South Gorge.
- Place a danger no swimming sign and a beach closed report sign at the entry point to the emergency access track.
- Place a danger no swimming sign and a beach closed report sign at the top of the stairs to main beach.
- Place a danger no swimming sign and a beach closed report sign in the middle of the beach at the Samarinda Drive access track.
- Ensure that your jet ski is ready for use and that you have a board and tube on your vehicle ready for use.
- Place Pt Lookout sandwich beach report sign at the bust stop making sure it is clearly visible.
- Place Frenchmans sandwich beach report sign at the top of the Frenchmans beach access.
Once the lifeguard has completed the beach closed set up procedures, their primary job is to maintain observation at Main Beach. At times they may be required to assist the Cylinder beach lifeguards with their duties, however the beach is not to be left unattended for long periods of time.
