Introduction

This guideline establishes appropriate requirements for the provision of oxygen equipment.

Procedure

  • Check beach for bluebottles on the waters edge during opening of the beach
  • Put out appropriate signage to the appropriate level of stinger risk, and set up appropriate treatment for your local beach.
  • Engage public with regular public announcements with marine stinger risk level with marine stinger treatment

Surveillance of the patrolled area takes precedence over low risk non-lethal marine stings.

Public Engagement
PA – how regularly (conditions dependant), PR – lifeguard positioning (so lifeguard can keep appropriate surveillance), Signage – location of signage (set up appropriate signage or your local beach)
Treatment of bluebottles (Physillia)

  1. Wash off affected area
  2. Remove any tentacle that is still on the skin
  3. Apply ice
  4. If it is a sever sting, apply hot water or a warm shower (treatments may vary to what your local area/ beaches facilities have on offer for this step – such as local public showers etc.)
  5. When to call an Ambulance? (Allergic reactions, time frames)
  6. Complete correct statistics and incidents reporting if required
