Please note –
Access to Sunrise is often limited due to King Tides, large swell events, heavy runoff in creeks and erosion of the beach. Lifeguards need to assess if they can safely proceed along the beach without taking undue risks, for example chance of being swamped by surf, unsafe speeds to get past a washout area. If it is unsafe to proceed along the beach, the lifeguard is to remain on standby at Sunshine Beach, informing Surfcom.
If the beach would normally have been closed, the lifeguard is to proceed via road and erect Beach Closed signage and a red flag. If the lifeguard expects to be on Stand By at Sunshine for an extended amount of time, the lifeguard should proceed via road and erect the condition blackboard with wording such as “Lifeguard unable to access beach due to high tide. Patrolled area 1km North at Sunshine Beach”.
Lifeguard is to proceed along beach and set up as per normal as soon as it is safe to do so. Conversely, lifeguards should monitor conditions and make sure they have an appropriate exit strategy throughout the day. For example, high tide at pack up, heavy downpours meaning creeks impassable. If lifeguard needs to leave early, inform Surfcom and consider leaving signage informing public which can be collected via road closer to finishing time.
