Volunteer patrol season Monday – Saturday 9am – 5pm (excluding public holidays)
All other times Monday – Sunday 9am – 5pm

  • Arrive at Net 2 tower. Prepare to set up & for radio sign on
  • Radio Sign on with Townsville Roving Lifeguard/Surfcom comprising signal report only
  • Sign-on LIMSOC (In stinger season sign on LIMSOC with ‘dragging’ status)
  • ABSENT STAFF TO BE REPORTED TO NBB LIFEGUARD SUPERVISOR IMMEDIATELY
START 09:00
  • Place Rescue Board and Tube on beach.
  • Check and test equipment – First Aid kit, Oxygen Kit, De-fib, communication equipment, spinal board and other rescue aids placing them in locations as per patrol setup – refer Lifeguard Operations Manual & NBB Lifeguard Supervisor.

Stinger season only
  • Perform stinger drags as per Marine Stinger Guidelines.
  • Perform stinger enclosure checks as per Uninet procedures (refer attachment), report any faults to NBB Lifeguard Supervisor immediately.
  • Make sure beach area is presentable and if all is in order OPEN Place patrol equipment out in designated areas.
  • CLOSE BEACH IF REQUIRED & Carry out beach set up for No Swimming. Contact Townsville Roving Lifeguard and follow instructions for duties required that day.

  • Make announcement via Pa/loud hailer to all beachgoers that the lifeguard will be going off duty in 15 minutes and after that time swimmers will be swimming at an unpatrolled beach.
  • Gather all gear and equipment return to tower for washing/cleaning and store neatly within tower.

  • Place portable radio & LG I-phone on charge.

DAILY DUTIES
  • Lifeguard daily diary to be filled out as day progresses and incidents occur. Supporting statements must be filled out immediately after reports and attached to respective reports.
  • Gather rubbish from beach and surrounds – place in rubbish bins.
  • Maintain public relations and educate patrons of regulations, laws and rules
  • Maintain security of tower
  • Maintain a clean working environment
  • Remove debris, sticks and logs from stinger net and surrounds
  • Inspect nearby creeks and drains for possible debris and erosion problems
  • Report all situations that require assistance
  • Carry out net inspection as close to low tide where possible
  • Check First Aid kit, communication equipment, rescue equipment, stretcher/ board and other rescue equipment report any repairs required or equipment for re-stock to NBB Lifeguard Supervisor.
  • Routinely check and report on toilets/showers during opening hours.
  • Re-stock First Aid supplies as required.
  • Gather lost property, log and forward to Townsville Roving Lifeguard.
  • Carry out other duties and complete within time given as instructed by NBB Lifeguard Supervisor.
  • Chains need to be set regularly and make sure net does not get buried.
  • All gear and equipment used each day is to be cleaned/maintained thoroughly before packing away in a neat and tidy fashion in the tower.
  • All lifeguard gear & equipment – FA kit, oxy, sprayjackets, logs etc. to be returned to the upstairs office at end of shift.
  • Any gear & equipment that is damaged, missing or inoperable is to be reported to the NBB Lifeguard Supervisor immediately.
