Introduction
Throughout the course of duty all lifeguard service staff are likely to operate a vehicle to assist with the delivery of lifeguard services. These may include but not limited to 4WD vehicles, SSVs (Side by Side Vehicle) and Golf Buggies.
Qualifications
All staff who are required to drive vehicles of any nature as a part of their job will be required to have the following.

If throughout the course of their duty a lifeguard loses their licence for any reason they must inform their Supervisor immediately.
SLSQ Vehicle Operations
SLSQ vehicles shall be driven by qualified personnel, approved by the lifeguard supervisor. All operators should receive an induction prior to operating any motorised vehicle. Lifeguards shall have a sound knowledge of the basic lifesaving equipment that the vehicle carries and where the equipment is stored. Local Council Ordinances on beach operations shall always be observed, particularly with regard to speed limit and the coastal dune areas.
Lifeguard services should have available their Local Council’s By-Laws with reference to vehicle operations within bathing reserves for all Vehicle Operators.
The following rescue/safety equipment must be fitted/ carried: -
- First Aid Kit
- Oxygen equipment/air viva
- Rescue board
- Handheld or mounted radio
- Orange flashing light
- Reverse beeper
- Forward beeper (Manually operated 4WD only)
- PA/loud hailer
- Marine Stinger kit and vinegar (NQ)
- Set of Max Trax if driving a 4WD vehicle (optional)
Recommended that all vehicles have –
- A long handled shovel
- Jumper leads
- Carry racks/roll bars
- Other appropriate PPE
- Snatch Straps (optional)
- All unauthorised vehicles and trailers are to be removed from the beach immediately after lifeguard tasks are done, e.g., towing RWC to water for training, setting up patrol on beach etc.
- Lifeguard services shall gain council/police/beach permits for all vehicles being used on the beach. Permits are to be clearly displayed on the vehicles.
