Introduction
Major incidents, Missing Persons, Search and Rescue, Marine Life incidents occur on North Stradbroke Island. These incidents may require the assistance of the Westpac Helicopter.
Policy
It is important that the lifeguards give the helicopter crew as much information as soon as possible to help with the rescue or search. If lifeguards feel that the helicopter is needed, make sure that they call the hanger immediately or contact Surfcom. Lifeguards will be informed if the helicopter is coming to assist once the helicopter crew has got clearance.
Procedure
- The lifeguard is to contact Surfcom and request Helicopter.
- The lifeguard is to give the following details.
- Who they are.
- What type of incident i.e. missing person.
- How long the person has been missing.
- Where that person was last seen.
- What that person may have been wearing.
- What the lifeguards have been doing to find this person.
- Inform them if any Lifeguards are helicopter trained.
- Where the best possible landing site might be if landing is needed.
- Once this is complete the lifeguards are to continue the search.
- Ensure one lifeguard is close to at least a phone and a radio.
- If Lifeguards for some reason do not need the assistance of the helicopter radio the helicopter or Surfcom and inform them that they will no longer be needed.
