Purpose
The below procedures must be completed within 15 minutes of shift commencement whilst maintaining constant surveillance throughout this process. When at a multiple Lifeguard location one Lifeguard must maintain constant surveillance from the Lifeguard tower or fixed location.
Procedure
Arrival
- Lifeguards are to be punctual and always arrive on site prior to shift commencement time and gain entry to the site as per individual site access instructions.
- Lifeguards are to be on Comms and in uniform at start time – not arriving at start time.
- Lifeguards are to be on radio and phone communications as soon as you arrive on site.
- Lifeguards are to sign on with Surfcom immediately via LIMSOC.
- Lifeguards are to check the ATV or 4WD and Jet Ski are operational (if site has this equipment), fueled and ready for use.
- Lifeguards are to check other rescue and emergency equipment.
On Beach
- Lifeguards are to deploy ATV/4WD fully equipped on to the beach (if required).
- Lifeguards are to survey beach conditions to identify the safest area.
- Lifeguards are to deploy rescue equipment Jet Ski, boards and tubes in the appropriate positions. Once vehicle is ready to be parked, ensure there is a marked off runway and front bollard ready for the vehicle.
- Lifeguards are to erect flagged area in the most suitable position and close to the water line. Ensure flags are deep enough as to not fall over.
- Lifeguards are to erect safety signage and line up signage with Flags (all to be in a straight line).
- Lifeguards are to update information board with relevant information. A conditions flag is always to be displayed in the center of the bathing area with beach information board. Beach information board is to have all information filled out, including the name of the at least the senior Lifeguard (no nicknames).
In Tower/ Hut/ Vehicle
- Lifeguards are to update LIMSOC with relevant information, beach population etc.
- Lifeguards are to check the daily dairy entries from previous day for any instructions.
- Complete the daily equipment checklist (ensure that the equipment is physically inspected and that it is in safe working condition.
- Check first aid stocks.
- Ensure first aid room (if applicable) is clean, tidy and equipped appropriately ready for use.
- Clean up any obvious rubbish in your immediate vicinity.
- Fill in required diary entries.
