Introduction

While on duty around the water area, lifeguards are to rotate between positions every 20-30mins minutes. Rotating between Lifeguard positions is mandatory to ensure Lifeguards remain alert. It also gives Lifeguards a chance to debrief when changing over and provides a different opinion on the risks in each area.

Lifeguards are also required to rotate positions from standing to roaming within their designated area. This will allow Lifeguards to change viewpoints and prevent complacency. Managing and changing Lifeguard positions throughout a rotation will further ensure Lifeguards stay alert and maintain a professional appearance.

Procedure

  • Lifeguards are encouraged to rotate in a clockwise direction (Tower 1 -> Tower 2 -> Tower 3. 1 Lifeguard should always remain in Tower 1 to monitor the Surfcom radio.
  • The “rove Lifeguard” position must also be rotated among Lifeguards every 20-30 minutes.
  • Lifeguards are not to remain stationary for long periods of time but are to maintain regular ‘walkarounds’ of their allocated area.
  • To maintain ‘freshness’ lifeguards are to swap towers on at least a 20–30-minute rotation.
  • Upon every rotation Lifeguards are to perform a handover, this should include at a minimum, identification of high-risk swimmers, any unsupervised children and any warnings issued to patrons.
