Introduction

In certain situations, a patient’s condition might not necessitate ambulance intervention but could be serious enough to require further medical attention. Given the sole ambulance on Magnetic Island, Lifeguards, as a final option and if the patient lacks personal transport, may find it necessary to transport the patient to the Magnetic Island Medical Clinic. Lifeguards must always treat First aids to the best of your abilities and within your scope of practice, prior to electing to transport. In all cases of emergency either contact SURFCOM or call ‘000’ or ‘112’.

Procedure

  1. Beach assessment is to be made before further action i.e. number of people, available Lifeguards and conditions. Ensure Clinic is open and advise of incident.
  2. Surfcom is to be informed that you are leaving the beach or require assistance.
  3. Magnetic Island Rove Lifeguard to be used if rostered. If Magnetic Island rove is not rostered the following is to occur.
  4. The red and yellow flags are to be dropped signalling that the beach is temporarily closed and the lifeguard is not supervising the water.
  5. If loud hailer is accessible and beach population is high announce over the loud hailer that you are closing the beach and recommend that people remove themselves form the water and await your return.
  6. Make your way to the Magnetic Island Clinic.
  7. Drop off patient and as quickly as possible return to the beach.
  8. Inform SURFCOM that you have returned to the beach.
