28.49. LGS NSI 049 Missing Persons in Water

Introduction

Missing Person(s) if the likelihood is of last scene in the water.

Procedure

1. Carry out Information gathering and initially search as per Lifeguard Operations Manual.
2. Inform Surfcom and Westpac Helicopter with relevant details as soon as possible.
3. P.A. System announcement may be done to clear the water of swimmers. Drop flags.
4. Also mark the area last sighted with an anchored float of some kind (rescue tube).
5. Plan and conduct a search appropriately according to conditions etc (Jetski, Line search, Lookout from headland).
6. Notify police (use Surfcom to notify police).
7. Obtain/ Request for more members to search team (Surf club or members of public).
