Introduction

From time to time, large groups from schools or other community organisations will visit the beach to swim and conduct activities within the bathing reserve. These groups need to be actively catered for in order to maintain a safe aquatic environment for the group and the general public present at the time.

Policy

In the interest of safety, lifeguards should approach and manage the aquatic activities of large groups within the bathing reserve.

Procedure

If a school group visits a beach, with or without notice, the following procedure is to be followed.

  • The group is to be approached seeking out a group leader.
  • Talk to the group leader to find out the number of people in the group, the age of people, their experience in the surf and the time they expect to spend on the beach.
  • Use this information to form a plan that best caters for the safety of the group and the general public. Some examples you could use in your plan are.
    • Split the group in two and only allow half to swim at once
    • Limit their swimming to waist depth
    • Deliver a surf education talk
    • Depending on conditions – ask the group to go to Cylinder beach where conditions are much safer and/or advise the group against swimming due to the high risk to members.
  • Propose a plan to the group and offer your assistance and flexibility without compromising safety.
  • Carry out the agreed plan and always recommend that they give prior notice of their visit so as additional staff, activities and/or equipment may be organised.
