Introduction
When Lifeguards are approached by parents, friends or family who have lost a person the following procedure is to take place.
Procedure
Lifeguards must determine whether the scenario involves a lost or found person.
Lost person:
Where a family member, friend or guardian approaches the lifeguard(s) and reports a person missing or a person is identified as missing as a result of an aquatic incident.
Found person:
In where the lifeguard(s) either: –
- Is approached by a member of public who has lost their group,
- Comes across someone who appears distressed and lost, or
- When a member of public finds the child/person and hands them over to a lifeguard.
The lifeguard should follow a series of escalating procedures to handle lost and found persons:

1 | Information Gathering | 0 – 2 Minutes |
2 | Preliminary Observation: Inform Library and Security personnel Perform Initial Search |
2 -10 Minutes |
3 | Inform Surfcom requesting QPS for missing person | Report after 10 minutes |
4 | Coordinated Search: Under External Agency | Search Continued Under Direction |
Note: If a lifeguard is informed of a lost/missing person that the lifeguard is to keep the informant with them or another lifeguard at all times until the missing person is located.
