Purpose
The below procedure has been put in place to assist lifeguards with public addresses and announcements.
Procedure
Lifeguards should be totally familiar with the operation of the Public Address system at each lifeguard station, as well as in vehicles and use it to regularly convey relevant information to the public. The PA system should be used as required as a proactive avenue to prevent incidents occurring.
Example closing the beach:
“Attention all beach users. Please be advised that the Lifeguard Service will be closing the beach over the next 10 minutes. Once the Red and Yellow flags are removed their will no longer be any Lifeguards on duty. Swimming is not recommended after this time. Tragedies do occur on unpatrolled beaches. This beach will reopen tomorrow morning at 7:30am. Thank you, have a nice evening.”
Example removing surf craft from flags:
“Attention all board riders. Can you please remove yourselves from the red and yellow flags. You are currently surfing in the designated swimming area. There are great banks either north or south of the flags which are both swimmer free. Thank you for your cooperation”.
Example condition update for beach users:
“Attention all swimmers and beach users please be advised that there are strong currents moving from right to left along the beach today. These strong currents will push you into a large rip north of the flags. If you can all please stay close to shore and ensure your feet are firmly planted on the sand at all times. If you get into difficulty please raise your arm and the lifeguards will come and get you. Enjoy your day and if you have any questions please come and see me/us”
