Introduction:

This Local Operating Procedure, developed in collaboration with South Bank Parklands, aims to create a safe environment and enjoyment for children.

Procedure:

Supervising children at South Bank Parkland Lagoons is a shared responsibility between parents/carers and lifeguards. Lifeguards’ main role is to actively supervise all aquatic users, activities and the aquatic environments for any further risks or emergencies. There is often the misconception by parents and carers that the responsibility for supervising young children lies solely with lifeguards.

“Lifeguards” are employed on a 1:100 ratio based on the expectation that parents/carers will directly supervise children.
The points below are outlined to maintain a safe and enjoyable environment at the South Bank Parklands Main Lagoon, Boat Pool and Aquativity/ Aquativity Stream:
• Children are to be actively supervised by a parent or guardian at all times.
• Children under 5 must remain within arm’s reach.
• Children under 10 years must be actively supervised by a person 16 years or older.
• Appropriate attire must be worn while in the pool; swimming nappies must be worn by young children.

Preventative actions

Preventative actions are crucial for SLSQ lifeguards at South Bank Parklands as they play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety of visitors. By proactively identifying potential hazards, enforcing rules, and providing timely warnings, lifeguards can mitigate risks, prevent accidents, and promote a safe aquatic environment for all patrons.

Actively participating in the supervision techniques surrounding young swimmers contributes to a safer and more enjoyable experience for all children at the South Bank Lands Pool. Lifeguards must be actively supervising all supervising children. When a child’s age or parental location is uncertain, engaging in conversations allows lifeguards to gather essential information, educate assessment surrounding the child’s swimming ability, and ensure accurate details about their age. This direct interaction provides accurate details about the child’s age and facilitates quick communication to locate their parent or guardian.
