South Bank Precinct
The dynamic South Bank precinct encompasses an area of 35 hectares, from the Victoria Bridge in the north to the Goodwill Bridge in the south and across to the Rail crossing. The popular precinct is just across the river from Brisbane’s CBD. South Bank has a diverse range of activities, tastes, cultures, and experiences.
Streets Beach
Streets Beach is Australia’s only beach in the heart of the city, one of South Bank’s most popular attractions. A unique man-made swimming beach overlooking the brilliant Brisbane River and CBD.
Conceived as a major piece of landscape, Streets Beach comprises of a crystal-clear lagoon with enough water to fill five Olympic swimming pools, sparkling, clean white sand beaches, palm trees, rocky creeks and shady hallows thick with sub-tropical trees and exotic plantings. It also includes a pool to the north of the lagoon called the Boat pool which is a large circular pool which has a wheel chair ramp and pontoon entries. Another pool to the south of the lagoon called Aquativity which is a perfect spot for children to play and explore.
The lagoon contains chlorinated fresh water that is recirculated every six hours at up to 125 litres per second. Water for the beach is pumped through three large sand filters and chemically treated before being pumped back into the pools. Dredge pump and self-propelled sifting machines clean the adjoining pools.
Streets Beach is 2000 square metres of free-formed concrete construction. Nearly half the lagoon area sits on reclaimed land that was once the Brisbane River.
The 4000 cubic metres of sand surrounding the beach is sourced from Rous Channel in Moreton Bay. Every year the beach is topped up with an additional 70 tonnes of sand to ensure that it is kept in its pristine condition.
A favourite with families and children, the beach is one of Brisbane’s best loved and most recognised attractions. Over 6 million people visit the parklands each year to enjoy the climate and recreational pleasures.

Diversity of Patrons
Due to the location of the Southbank Parklands, the facility has a very diverse range of users. This diversity brings several unique challenges as a large proportion of this user group is considered more prone to drowning and injury, requiring greater supervision. This user group includes but is not limited to:
- Cultural and linguistically diverse
- Age (Children – Seniors)
- Persons with a disability or medical conditions
- School groups
- Tourists
- Sporting groups
- Non-swimmers, weak swimmers, and persons unfamiliar with the aquatic environment
- Variable rates of supervision of some of these patrons, such as children or those will mental illnesses
- Aquatic exercise programs
- Careers/Guardians in place of parents
- Large, organised groups
In addition, the parklands’ location is located close to the city and public attractions there lower socio-economic children that attend the lagoons without any adult supervision, adding another level of complexity to the supervision of the pool.
