In recent years and in accordance with Staff Rule 1.5, staff members in the Professional category and above, or at the FS-6 or FS-7 levels, who hold permanent resident status in a country other than their country of nationality and are granted a fixed-term appointment of one year or longer under the Staff Rules were asked to renounce their permanent residency status prior to the appointment, unless otherwise approved by the Secretary-General. However, this matter has been under review by the General Assembly since the 69th Session in 2014 and, as an interim measure, incoming staff members are permitted to retain their permanent residency status.

Two waiver documents are available for signature by the selected applicant at the time of the offer. One for permanent residents of the United States, and another for permanent residents of other countries. These documents are issued as part of the offer documents. (Annex VII: Waiver Templates)

Entities must ensure proper recording of all cases for potential reporting to the General Assembly. The waiver cannot be signed retroactively in the event a staff member fails to sign it on or before the appointment date.
