This method should be selected for new candidates that have never been employed by the UN Secretariat. An initial appointment can be a fixed-term or a temporary appointment.

There are two types of initial appointment:

1. Initial FTA governed by ST/AI/2013/1 and Staff Rule 4.14(b) & 4.16.

  • Initial FTA of one year or more where the candidate is CRB/FCRB endorsed, per ST/AI/2013/1, ST/AI/2013/1/Corr.1 and Staff Rule 4.13, 4.15.
  • Initial FTA of one year or more where the appointment is limited to specific entities because the selection is not CRB/FCRB endorsed per ST/AI/2013/1, ST/AI/2013/1/Corr.1 and Staff Rule 4.13.
  • Initial FTA of one year or more where the candidate is selected from a competitive examination roster YPP governed by, ST/AI/2012/2/Rev.1, and ST/AI/2012/2/Rev.1/Amend.1. Please note that the YPP gives rise to very specific requirements that must be observed when processing the selection and offer management of a successful candidate for initial appointment with the Organization.
  • Initial FTA of one year or more for candidates successful in a competitive examination for posts requiring special language skills governed by ST/AI/2020/3. This AI defines the special terms and conditions for recruitment of external candidates (and placement of internal candidates) who are successful in a competitive examination administered by the United Nations for posts requiring specific language skills in the Professional category in conference-serving areas (“competitive language examination”), that is, interpreters, translators/précis writers, revisers, editors, verbatim reporters, copy preparers/proof-readers/production editors, translation support officers, terminologists and computational linguists.

2. Initial Temporary appointment governed by ST/AI/2010/4/Rev. 1 and Staff Rule 4.12.
