An assignment is a movement of a staff member serving on a fixed term, permanent or continuing appointment to a new position within the UN Secretariat on a temporary basis. In cases of staff released on temporary assignment, the releasing entities are responsible for ensuring that the posts of staff members holding fixed-term, continuing, or permanent appointments are blocked for the regular incumbent, unless agreed by both entities and the staff member otherwise, upon the release or at the time of extension of the temporary assignment.
