The clone stamp is useful for duplicating or removing specific parts of a layer. Combined with HitFilm’s feature tracking this is a very powerful feature.

A separate layer can be used as a clone mask, defining the area to clone. Using a simple plane is usually the easiest way to do this, as the plane can be easily resized and positioned if necessary.

The clone source can be from the applied layer or from another layer, as defined by the Clone From property.

The Source and Target positions can then be specified, or linked to other layers. This enables the cloning to be linked to points containing tracking data.

  • Clone Mask: Select the layer used to define the area to be cloned. Using a simple plane is an effective way to do this, since the plane can easily be resized and repositioned when necessary.
  • Mask Blur: Softens the edges of the clone mask, to help blend the close stamp seamlessly with the main image.
  • Clone From: Select the source from which pixels will be cloned.
    • Current Layer & Frame: Use this option if you want to use a portion of the visible frame to remove something from another area of the visible frame.
    • Current Layer: Use this option to use the current frame, but clone pixels from a different frame within that layer. This is often effective for removing a moving object from the frame, if earlier or later frames show the affected area without the object present.
      • Frame Number: When Current Layer is selected, a new slider will appear, which you can use to select the frame from which the clone pixels will be sourced.
    • Selectable Layer: Use this option to select pixels from a different layer on the timeline. Use this option if you have created a single clean image with an object removed, and want to clone it into multiple frames of the video layer.
  • Source: These controls alter the position of the source layer relative to the target layer.
    • Position: Edit the source position using X (horizontal) and Y (vertical) values.
    • Use Layer: Use the position of another layer to define the source position.
  • Target: These controls alter the position of where the clone stamp is applied
    • Position: Edit the source position using X (horizontal) and Y (vertical) values.
    • Use Layer: Use the position of another layer to define the target position.
