Creates the appearance of a cartoon drawing, with smoothed colors and lines drawn over edges.

You can heavily customize the appearance of the edge lines and the fill.

  • Preset: Choose from a variety of built-in presets, each of which gives you a predefined set of values for the effect controls. These can be used as-is, or as a starting point for further adjustments.
  • Edge: Adding lines to the edges within your image is an effective way of simulating the look of hand-drawn cartoons, which rely heavily on strong lines for their style. You can control the presence and appearance of lines using these controls.
    • Color: Choose a color for the lines. You can use the eyedropper to select a color from the layer, or click the swatch to open a color picker and choose any color you prefer. You can also manually enter the color values for the red, green, and blue channels.
    • Detail Scale: Alters the size of the details which will be included in the line drawing. Lower values include smaller details, and produce finer lines. Higher values exclude smaller details, and produce heavier lines.
    • Size: Defines the thickness of the lines.
    • Threshold: Specifies the minimum contrast required for edges to be included in the line drawing. Increasing this value excludes more subtle details from receiving lines.
  • Fill: Averaging areas of similar color down to a single color value, a process called posterization, creates the blocky color style we associate with cartoons. The number of colors and how they are blended can be adjusted using these controls.
    • Smooth Source: Defines the radius of the blur used to reduce fine detail and simplify the colors.
    • Posterize: Specify the number of distinct color values that will appear in each color channel. This is not the total number of colors in the final image, due to the multiple combinations possible with three color channels.
    • Smooth Posterize: Softens the transitional areas between posterized values, creating more subtle transitions between colors.
    • Posterize Phase: Shifts the phase of the posterization within each color channel.
  • Saturation: Increases or reduces the saturation of colors in the clip or layer.
  • Brightness: Brightens or darkens the colors in the clip or layer.
