Rules In Summary:

  • Rules are created in Rule Sets, which in turn are assigned to Versions.
  • Rules are applied to a cell range. The range assumes every member of each dimension is selected unless a dimension member or set is specifically included in the rule range.
  • Be wary of using index numbers in rules, because if the dimension members change, the rules may give invalid results.
  • Consider and check the implications any structure changes may have on the rules when you make them.
    • Re-arranging dimensions may impact rules that use the sum through function (..),
    • New members may need to be included in sets if sets are used in rule ranges,
    • New rules may be required where there are specific calculations relating to specific variables or products.
  • Remember the principal of rule precedence. Rules higher up the list in a rule set take priority over those further down when there is an overlap of rule ranges.
  • Ratio rules are always calculated last
