The Cubix journal module enables full financial double entry journal adjustments to be posted directly into a model. Using journals is optional. If it is required it must be switched on when designing and building the model and further attributes will need to be configured in the variables dimension.

To enable the journal module, click on the power icon in the journal tile.

With the journal module enabled, the variable dimension must be edited to set the appropriate attributes. The variable list can be accessed directly from the journal menu tile.

In the variable list, two additional columns will be displayed. Is Financial and Is Debit. All the financial variables should be identified by ticking ‘Is Financial’. That is any variable where you may want to apply financial double entry journals.

The financial variables then need to be identified as either Debit or Credit. Debit variables are selected by ticking ‘Is Debit’. Any financial variables where ‘Is Debit’ remains un-ticked are assumed to be Credit variables.

Implied Balance

With the journal module enabled, the implied balance setting on the Advanced Features screen determines how positive and negative values are treated in relation to the financial account debit/credit settings.

When Implied Balance is not selected (un-ticked), Debit adjustments will always be posted as a positive figure and Credit adjustments will always be posted as a negative figure, regardless of the designated account type. So if your model design is to show all credits as negative values, do not select Implied Balance.

When Implied balance is selected (ticked), the posting will assume that all financial values are entered as positive figures and will follow the following posting rules:

  • Posting a debit value to a debit account = positive value
  • Posting a credit value to a credit account = positive value
  • Posting a debit value to a credit account = negative value
  • Posting a credit value to a debit account = negative value

If your model design is to show all financial values as positive values, regardless of whether they are debits or credits, make sure Implied Balance is selected.

Input, Adjust and Net Views

When the journal module is enabled, the View dimension will be amended to include two additional views, Adjust and Net. All journals are posted to the Adjust view, keeping them separate from the original Input view. A calculation rule is also automatically added in order to calculate the Net view which displays the net result after all adjustments.
