A constitution embodies the aspirations and values of the organisation. It is a set of fundamental principles and rules governing the conduct of the organisation, establishing its concept, character and structure which together define the organisation. A constitution should tell you:
- Why the organisation exists – its purpose and objectives
- Who the organisations key stakeholders are – who should benefit from its work
- How the organisation intends to work – broad principles and basic structures for decision making, getting the work done and dealing with the finances and assets of the organisation
A constitution is three-fold within an organisation, therefore it is important that it is clear and simple so that:
- Members understand their rights and responsibilities
- Leaders understand their mandate and necessity to be accountable
- Members of the public understand why the organisation exists and how it operates
