The following information will provide a brief overview of several key classes of insurance either provided as standard, or available as an optional cover, for Queensland Surf Lifesaving entities.
General and Products Liability
This policy is commonly known as “Public Liability”. It responds to protect the clubs and its members when a claim of negligence is made, that has led to personal injury or property damage.
Actual examples of claims that have been received under this policy are as follows:
- A member of the public sues the club because they have been struck by a surf boat in the water
- A patron sues a Supporters Club after falling down the stairs
- A member of the club sues the club, SLSQ and SLSA due to an injury sustained while operating an IRB
- The family of someone who has been rescued by Lifesavers sues the patrolling members of failing to prevent injury or drowning
Importantly, the policy provides what is known as “Errors and Omissions” cover for patrolling members, in the event that a claim arises from their patrol activities, rescues, or first aid administration.
The policy addresses both costs associated with representation and defence of the club and its members, and any costs that may be awarded to a claimant as part of the settlement or litigation processes.
