A Member Protection Information Officer (MPIO) provides information and guidance on rights, responsibilities, and options available within the complaint resolution procedures. An MPIO is the first point of contact in a club for any enquiries, concerns or complaints around harassment, child abuse and other inappropriate behaviour. The MPIO provides information to the person with the concern. An MPIO is impartial and will not investigate or mediate complaints. Their role is to provide information to members who need it.

New Member Protection Officers
Training is to be completed through Sports Integrity Australia, it’s a free course in Queensland. This training has two components, first there are some modules online and the second is a face-to-face workshop (can be virtual if needed). If you are having issues with getting into the course, please contact the Member Welfare Coordinator at memberwelfare@lifesaving.com.au
The link can be found Here. The next step is a face-to-face workshop within your local council, this can be done virtually if required. Link can be found Here. Further knowledge on SLSQ’s policies and procedures is a must. The main policy instruments to consider are the Member Protection Policy (MPP), the Complaints Resolution Policy and the Child Safe Policy, all available on the SLSQ Lifesaving Website – Member Area under SLSA policies. We also have the constitution and by-laws.
Once you have completed the courses through Sport integrity Australia, you will need to email the Member Welfare Coordinator memberwelfare@lifesaving.com.au with the certificate of proof. After you have completed the training, you will be presented with an award on Surfguard. The Surfguard Award will hold an expiry of 2 years. However, this training is not specific to SLSQ, therefore, the MPIO will need to learn and understand SLSQ’s policies and procedures, to assist members.
Information packages will be sent upon completion of the above requirements. This information will have tips and guides on how to be a Member Protection Information Officer.
