Membership categories
The philosophy behind Surf Life Saving is to establish and recruit as many people as possible to become Members for participation in Surf Life Saving activities. Due to this philosophy SLSA created a number of membership categories to accommodate for all levels of involvement providing that the minimum requirement is met. It is important to note that the following membership categories can only apply if they are included as provisions within the Club Constitution, if they are not then they must not be used. The wording in square brackets refers to the Surf Guard equivalent category.
Clubs are asked to check regularly on the Membership Category of members to ensure that they are in the correct category.
For example, a member who is listed as a Probationary or Associate who gain a bronze and patrol won’t automatically be changed to Active by Surfguard. Clubs must go in and manually change it.
Further information for membership categories can be found Membership Categories – SLSQ Administration Operations Manual.
Membership Transfer
Members may choose to transfer their competitive rights or full membership to another club. Clubs and members must adhere to the rulings as outlined in the current Australian Surf Sports Manual and any other association bulletins/circulars.
A member of an affiliated club who desires to transfer competitive rights to another affiliated club during the currency of a competitive season must comply with the following conditions:
- Transfers of competitive membership shall take effect from the date approved by the controlling authority (Branch)
- Members are permitted two competitive transfers per calendar year (January to December)
- Any further transfers in that year will be processed for effect in the next calendar year. An exception to this will be relocation due to employment/ study/ family commitments. Such transfers will be subject to consideration and approval by the branch and SLSQ of the member’s losing club.
Types of Transfers (as per the SLSA Helpdesk Surfguard User Manual)
Complete: Used when the member is doing a complete transfer from one club to another club.
Non-competition Rights: used when transferring a member to another club, but keeping their competition rights with their original club. This will give the member Dual Membership at one or more clubs.
Competition Rights: used when moving a member’s competition rights to another club, but still retaining their membership at their original club as a non-competitor. This will give the member Dual Membership at one or more clubs.
Club Tip Some clubs may have processes and policies relating to Competition Right transfers. Please ensure you check your Club policies, By-laws and if you need further clarification, please contact your Club administrator. For more information refer to the SLSQ Club Management App Exit Surveys |
All transfers can now be processed electronically via Surfguard. Members can also initiate this themselves on the SLSA Members Portal
