A skills matrix, also known as a competency matrix or skills inventory, is a tool used to assess and track the skills and competencies of individuals with the Committee. It provides a visual representation of the skills possessed by individuals, allowing for better resource allocation, decision-making, and identification of skill gaps.
In a skills matrix, skills or competencies relevant to a particular context or job role are listed as columns, while individuals or team members are listed as rows. The matrix typically uses a rating system to indicate the level of proficiency or mastery of each skill for each individual.
Clubs and Branches should have a skills matrix for their committees to ensure their effective skill set on committees to support driving key operational and strategic initiatives.
Tips on how to create your skills matrix:
Identify Desired Skills: | Determine the key skills and areas of expertise that are relevant to the committee’s objectives and responsibilities. Consider the specific knowledge, experience, and competencies required for effective decision-making and task execution. |
Assess Current Committee Members: | Evaluate the skills and expertise of existing committee members. This can be done through self-assessment or gathering input from each member regarding their own skills and experiences. It may be helpful to provide a standardised questionnaire or survey to collect this information consistently. |
Define Skill Levels: | Define skill levels or proficiency levels that align with the identified skills. This can be done using a rating scale, such as beginner, intermediate, and advanced, or any other appropriate descriptors. Ensure the skill levels are clearly defined to avoid ambiguity. |
Collect Information: | Gather the skills and proficiency assessments from each committee member. Compile the data in a centralised document or spreadsheet for easy reference and analysis. |
Analyse and Visualise the Data: | Review the collected information and analyse the skills and proficiency levels of committee members. Identify areas of strength, areas for improvement, and any skill gaps that may exist within the committee. |
Develop the Skills Matrix: | Create a skills matrix based on the analysis of the data. The matrix can be organised in a table format, with committee members listed vertically and the identified skills listed horizontally. Assign the appropriate skill levels to each member for each skill. |
Communicate and Review: | Share the skills matrix with the committee members. Encourage open discussion and feedback regarding the accuracy and completeness of the matrix. Make any necessary revisions or updates based on the input received. |
Use the Skills Matrix: | Incorporate the skills matrix into committee processes and decision-making. Utilize it for task assignment, resource allocation, succession planning, and identifying training and development needs. Regularly update the skills matrix as new members join the committee or existing members acquire new skills. |
Club Tip Clubs should ensure that the skills matrix is also aligned to what achievements are outlined in their strategic plan. This will ensure that skills required at the management committee can help to achieve the KPIS set |
