The ACNC is the national register of charities and was established to:

  • maintain, protect and enhance public trust and confidence in the Australian not-for-profit sector
  • support and sustain a robust, vibrant, independent and innovative not-for-profit sector
  • promote the reduction of unnecessary regulatory obligations on the sector.

Each year, the ACNC requires clubs to submit annual information statements to ensure you are meeting compliance requirements. This will be outlined further in Chapter Four – Affiliations.

As part of this, the ACNC have a governance standard that can guide your club with how a charity should be run. The Standard is set with a high-level principle and not prescribed rules, your club must decide how you will comply with them.

ACNC has a self-evaluation tool you can use to assess your Clubs governance – Self-evaluation for charities | ACNC

ACNC also has some key online courses that Officer Bearers should complete to better understand

  • Becoming a charity member – what you should know
  • Governance Standards
  • Reporting Obligations of Your Charity

These are free courses when you register with the ACNC – Online learning | ACNC

SLSQ will hold and an annual Governance Induction for all new Officers Bearers that is specific to SLSQ requirements.
