Membership Recruitment

There are a range of resources on the SLSQ Club Management App specific to Recruitment for clubs to utilise. Please refer to Member Recruitment.

Recruitment is a key part of the SLSQ Membership Team and Membership Services Committees priorities. Some key recruitment strategies clubs/branches should consider.

Recruitment Planning

The process of Recruitment Planning is very similar to Human Resource Management (HRM) which involves planning and organising the recruitment, induction, training and development, performance appraisal, reward, recognition, retention and replacement of members.
This is achieved through the provision of training and development opportunities, by offering support and by recognising and rewarding members’ performances. Effective HRM should lead to motivated and contented members, which will encourage them to stay at your club. The cyclical nation of recruitment is best depicted in the traditional model.

Recruitment Resources

A state-wide recruitment campaign is currently underway with further developments to be released late 2023.

Member Retention

In Membership there are a few programs delivered to retain our members. The ones covered within the Member Development section highlight the different age groups from 15 to 30 years. There are also a range of Development camps/programs clubs deliver and each branch delivers a development program each season.

SLSQ is committed to supporting the clubs and branches through key Development Programs . For a list of when these occur, reach out to your Branch Office.

It has been recognised if members have a bad experience (especially in the first year), they are unlikely to return the following year/ future.

Keys to creating a positive experience are:

  • Setting clear expectations through policy and procedure
  • Involvement
  • Creating a positive member experience
  • Developing, and maintaining communication plans
  • Social events
  • Education on development pathways

Member On Boarding

Clubs need to maintain expectations and commitments required to various roles within Surf Lifesaving.

For an example If nippers join a surf club, their family will be invited to attend a Family Inclusion Program which covers all aspects that occur within Junior Activities. Ranging from how a nipper day is delivered to what roles parents/guardians can do to help. Resources and information on how to run a Family Inclusion Can be found on the SLSQ Club Management App under the Junior Activities section.

It is a good opportunity for our clubs to explain what roles and opportunities are available within Life Saving. The Pathways information on the app can start this discussion or refer members to the SLSQ Website, specifically the Member Opportunities page. Alternatively, for an idea of what you can do at each age demographic refer to the Member Development section.

Exit Surveys

When a volunteer/member leaves your club, it is a good opportunity to gather information as to their reason for leaving and their experiences at the club. The information gathered from an exit survey or interview may be used to improve the club and recognise the efforts of the volunteer.

Club Tip
Exit Survey templates are available for your use. Consider the feedback provided by exiting members and act on this accordingly – particularly if it is regarding things that won’t require budget to address.
Ensure that you encourage members to reconsider joining again in future when the time is right for them.

Refer to SLSQ Club Management App for further information on Exit Surveys.
