Cross Fade on layer automatically transitions between looks on a layer

Cross Fade on Layer is present on every layer of a Xfade mix. Non-XFade and special mixes do not have the crossfade function.

Basic function

Crossfade on layer is designed to be easy to use. Simply choose a new clip, or look, and the layer will fade to it automatically. If crossfading is not desired, set the mode to bypass and the layer will operate as normal.

Crossfade on layer operates by pairing each media layer with an invisible, hidden layer. To create a fade, the hidden layer is set to the new values and the intensities of the visible and hidden layers are faded as set by the fade mode.

Since Hippotizer version 4.6.0, the mix type defines whether the layers have crossfade included. Make sure that the mix is a XFade mix in order to use crossfade on layer.

Concepts

Visible and Hidden Layer

Every Hippotizer layer is actually comprised of two media layers; a hidden and a visible.

The visible and hidden layers switch automatically with each crossfade so the output is always either only the visible layer, or during a fade, a combination of both.

A cross fade is comprised of a sequence of events:

  • The visible layer renders to the output
  • When crossfade is enabled, new values are applied to the hidden layer (depending on Autofade mode)
  • The layers fade by reducing the intensity of the visible layer while increasing the intensity of the hidden layer
  • Once the fade is complete, the hidden and visible layers synchronise and the hidden layer is ready for new values.

Fade Type

The Crossfade mode enables and disables crossfade and sets the style of fade.

Bypass

By default, Cross fade is set to bypass for every layer. When bypassed, the crossfade engine is disabled to save resources.

Crossfade

Fades the visible layer down as the back layer is fading up.

Fade through Black

Fades the visible layer down to zero then fades the hidden layer up.

Fade up first

Fades the hidden layer up before fading the visible layer out completely.

Fade Time

The time a fade will take to complete. The default setting is 1 second.

Autofade

Autofade determines when a crossfade is started.
