This mode analyses the luminance value of each pixels RGB channels, selecting the lighter of the two blended layers pixels and displaying those. If the two layers have the same pixel colours then the result will show no change. Anything that is black in the blend layer will be transparent and anything lighter than white will lighten the base layer.
