CALCULATION TEMPLATE

This spreadsheet includes a template for calculating racial and ethnic diversity data. Organizations are welcome to use a different template as long as the submitted data meets the documentation requirements.

EXAMPLES FOR FINDING “THE VALUE X”

Australia-Based Organizations

Use the “Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander” percentage for the applicable city/state/territory/country (see data summary from the Australian Bureau of Statistics) and subtract this from 100% to find the value X.

Canada-Based Organizations

Add the “Indigenous Identity” rate with the “Total Visible Minority Population” rate for the applicable city/region/province/territory/country (add any necessary geography filters to the Statistics Canada profile table) and subtract this subtotal from 100% to find the value X.

U.S.-Based Organizations

Use the “White Alone, Not Hispanic or Latino” percentage for the applicable city/state/region/country (this number can be found in the eighth row under the “Race and Hispanic Origin” section on the Census QuickFacts page) and subtract this from 100% to find the value X.

Note that these are only meant to serve as example calculations. Living Future encourages each organization to intentionally investigate its community’s composition and define its approach accordingly.

ORGANIZATIONS WITH MULTIPLE LOCATIONS

Scenario 1

Organization has more than four locations within one country, attempting to achieve Level 4.

APPROACH: Country-level data input as the value X.

EXAMPLE:

  • A sustainability consulting firm has offices located in 10 states in the United States. In the United States, racial and ethnic minorities comprise 41% of the population.
  • To achieve Level 4 recognition:
    • Workforce Diversity: The firm would need to document that racial and ethnic minorities comprise at least 41% of the overall workforce (1 × 41%).
    • Senior Leadership Diversity: The firm would need to document that racial and ethnic minorities comprise at least 33% of the senior leadership team (0.8 × 41%).

Scenario 2

Multinational organization, attempting to achieve Level 4.

APPROACH: Use country-level data to find weighted contribution from each country to determine weighted value X (the calculation template spreadsheet has these formulas built in).

EXAMPLE:

  • An engineering firm has three offices in the United States and three in Canada.
  • Racial and ethnic minorities comprise 41% of the population in the U.S. and 32% of the population in Canada. U.S.-based employees comprise 20% of the workforce, and 80% of employees are based in Canada.
  • The weighted racial and ethnic population percentage (i.e., the weighted X) is calculated as follows:
    • 41% racial and ethnic minorities in the U.S. × 20% of the workforce → 0.41 × 0.2 → 8%
    • 32% racial and ethnic minorities in Canada × 80% of the workforce → 0.32 × 0.8 → 26%
    • Total = 34%
  • To achieve Level 4 recognition:
    • Workforce Diversity: The firm would need to document that racial and ethnic minorities comprise at least 34% (i.e., 100% of the weighted X) of the overall workforce when weighting employment across the U.S. and Canada (20% and 80%, respectively).
    • Leadership Diversity: The firm would need to document that racial and ethnic minorities comprise at least 27% (i.e., 80% of the weighted X) of the senior leadership team when weighting employment across the U.S. and Canada (20% and 80%, respectively).

ORGANIZATIONS WITH PHYSICAL LOCATIONS AND REMOTE WORKERS

Scenario 3

Primarily remote organization (within one country) that also has a physical office, attempting to achieve Level 4.

APPROACH: Country-level data input as the value X.

EXAMPLE:

  • A U.S.-based regenerative design nonprofit is headquartered in Portland, Oregon. Only 35% of the workforce is located in the Portland area and works in the office, while 65% of employees work remotely and are distributed across the United States.
  • Since more than 50% of employees primarily work remotely throughout the United States, the organization should use nationwide data as the baseline.
  • In the United States, racial and ethnic minorities comprise 41% of the population.
