The Motorola Corporation created Six Sigma. The Six Sigma approach is to train a small cadre of in-house quality leaders. These leaders are called Black Belts, and they train lower supervisors in a somewhat less intense environment; these supervisors are called Green Belts. At the head of all trainer personnel is the Master Black Belt. In order to improve an operation, these Six Sigma teams employ something known as DMAIC:
D—Define the goals.
M—Measure the existing system to establish a metric by which progress toward the goals can be tracked.
A—Analyze the system to identify ways to eliminate the gap between the existing performance and the desired goals.
I—Improve the system.
C—Control the new system.
