Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder involving decreased amounts of hemoglobin, an oxygen-carrying protein, and red blood cells, resulting in anemia. Mild forms of thalassemia may not require therapy whereas more severe forms may require blood transfusions and / or therapy.
