SUB-METERING CLARIFICATIONS

All Projects (Except Single-Family Residential)

Sub-metering must address major energy end uses, which includes heating, cooling, lighting, fans/pumps, plug loads, vertical transportation, and domestic hot water, unless some of the listed items are not applicable to the project. Multifamily projects are not required to meter end uses within each unit, but instead must either meter each unit as a whole or sub-meter building-wide end uses (e.g., central water heat, space heat, ventilation, etc.).

Sub-metering data allows improvement of building performance over time, troubleshooting of unpredicted energy loads, and identification of repair/maintenance needs. It also can help other stakeholders understand how the project and its components function. HVAC metering that combines heating, cooling, and fan energy is allowed if the package unit system warranties would be voided by rewiring the units for the ability to sub-meter.

Single-Family Residential

Single-family residences must develop a method for troubleshooting energy use issues and understanding energy-use patterns, such as through real-time or plug-in energy monitors.
