Chemical Abstract Service Registry Numbers (CASRNs) are unique numerical identifiers for registered chemicals, compounds, or organic substances. They are an effective and transparent way to evaluate building product ingredients and communicate with manufacturers, and it is the chemicals identified by CASRN in the Red List that govern a product’s compliance with this Imperative.

The chemical classes identified in the requirements of this Imperative organize the chemicals present on the CASRN Red List and signal which classes contain chemicals that are candidates for addition to the CASRN Red List. While all chemicals on the CASRN Red List fall within the Red List Classes, not all chemicals contained in the Red List Classes are necessarily on the CASRN Red List.

The Red List Classes and CASRN Red List will be reviewed and updated annually according to the LBC Watch List and Red List Update process.
