The Practicum Site (Site Supervisor) will refer to the approved community program where a student will be completing their practicum requirements under supervision. The staff person will be referred to as Site Supervisor and the community program will be referred to as Practicum Site.
The Site Supervisor or appropriate delegate will provide students with an orientation to the site, its role within the delivery system it applies to, its philosophy, policies and expectations. A Site Supervisor will be assigned to a student or students with the following expectations: will meet with regularly to provide feedback, provide direction and instruction on how best to meet the needs of the population. If other staff are supervising or observing please ensure they have opportunity to contribute to the students feedback. Site Supervisors will help students with problem-solving, planning, etc; while providing shift evaluations, written comments, and taking students to meetings regarding the children/youth. This is a very helpful and concrete way for students to understand what they are doing well or needing to improve.
The Site Supervisor will assist students in setting realistic goals by recognizing that they are primarily in a learning role and is therefore different from staff. They will plan guided learning experiences for students appropriate to their level of competence and related to the objectives of the practicum course. Site Supervisors are encouraged to provide students with thorough midterm and final evaluation comments. Site Supervisors are required to verify student IPT attendance by initialing the IPT tracking hours form. Site Supervisors will ensure that students are never left alone in the practicum site without supervision.
The Site Supervisor will be in contact with the university regarding the written evaluation of student performance, as well as contact the FS when problems occur in regard to performance. Examples of this could be demonstrating unethical behaviour, being consistently late or absent without permission or not taking direction appropriately, etc. If necessary, they will participate in evaluation conferences with students and the FS
