In accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act (2017), organizations accepting practicum students have an obligation to be responsible for (pg.13-14):

  • The health and safety of students
  • Understand the rights of a student
  • Not to subject students to harassment or violence
  • Provides supervision by a person who is competent and understands and applies OHS regulations
  • Consults health and safety committee or representative to resolve health and safety concerns
  • Health and safety concerns raised will be resolved in a timely manner
  • Students should be trained in necessary matters to protect their health and safety

Practicum Supervisor Obligations

Practicum supervisors are required under the OHS act (2017) to exhibit the following (p.14-15):

  • Ensures competence to supervise all individuals under their supervision
  • Protect the health and safety of all students under their supervision by taking all precautions necessary
  • Ensure supervisors are working in accordance with the procedures and measures required by OHS act
  • Ensures that everyone under their supervision uses all hazards controls, and properly wears protective equipment required
  • Ensure that all individuals under the supervisor’s supervision are not subjected to or participate in harassment or violent at the worksite
  • Advise everyone under their supervision of all known or foreseeable hazards to health and safety
  • Report all concerns about unsafe or harmful workplace
  • Cooperate with any individual exercising their rights within the OHS act
  • Supervisors must comply with the OHS act

Students Obligations

Obligations of practicum students under the OHS act (p.15):

  • Protect the heath and safety of yourself and other person’s you will work with
  • Communicate with organization or supervisor for the purpose of protecting the health and safety of all individuals with the organization
  • When required use all devices and wear all personal protective equipment designated and provided for protection
  • Refrain from causing or participating in harassment or violence
  • Report all concerns on unsafe or harmful workplace conditions to a supervisor
  • Comply with the OHS act, regulations and code
