How to tell when there’s a gas leak?

A strong rotten egg smell is added to natural gas so it is detectable if a leak occurs (The City of Calgary, n. d.). You also may hear the sound of escaping gas from a pipe.
If any of the two situations occur there is a high chance there is a gas leak.

Gas leak inside a building

  • Leave the building quickly and leave open windows and doors.
  • Leave lights and appliances alone as they may be a source of ignition.
  • Call 911 when safe to do so.
  • Call your service provider’s emergency line.
  • If anyone experiences respiratory distress call 911 immediately.

Gas leak outside of a building

  • Call 911 immediately from a safe distance.
  • Keep children and youth away from the area.
  • Do not smoke or light any flames.

How to stay warm in the winter during a gas outage?

  • To keep the place from getting cold close the blinds and drapes, avoid opening and closing windows and doors, and wear extra layers of clothing.
  • Be careful when using other sources of heat. Avoid wood fireplaces, if you do decide to use them you need to open a nearby window.
  • Indoor electric heaters are safe to use.
  • Fuel-burning appliances emit carbon monoxide – a clear, colorless, and odorless gas that can cause illness or death. Never use fuel-burning appliances inside, this
includes: barbecues, generators, camp stoves, kerosene heaters.
