Experiential learning is an essential component of the curriculum for the Bachelor of Child Studies Degree. These opportunities (Practicum and Capstone courses) are designed to introduce students to a wide array of practice, community programs, and skilled professionals. In order to facilitate these learning experiences, we require practicum sites to meet Bachelor of Child Studies practicum requirements as well as MRU practicum agreement specifications.

In addition, the completion of each practicum-related experience aligns with three levels of provincial certification through the Government of Alberta-Child Care Staff Certification. For students to progress through these three levels; Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3, students are required to log a specific number of hours for each stage, along with required course work based on Alberta Child Care Certification guidelines.

Countable hours are derived from their onsite experience as well as attendance at all on-campus seminars. This may include talks, workshops, and practice-oriented experiences as approved by the Field Director.

For more information on how students can qualify for certification, please visit the Alberta Child Care Staff Certification website.
