Accident or illness
In the case of an accident or serious illness involving a child:
Provide medical attention if you are able to or seek another staff member to assist.
The parent of the child needs to be notified immediately.
Debrief with your supervisor and with staff.
Inform practicum instructor about the incident.
Incident reporting
Report any incidents of serious illness or injury to a child while under your supervision.
Programs may have different processes when reporting an incident, follow the policy and procedures of your practicum placement.
Inform practicum instructor of the event if you were involved in the incident.
Potential health risk
If you have reason to believe that a child is showing signs or symptoms of illness you are required to:
Let your supervisor know or another staff member to make arrangements for the child’s parents to pick up their child to ensure the safety of everyone within the program.
The child can not return until there is no longer a health risk to persons in the program.

Signs or symptoms of illness exhibited by a child include
- Vomiting, having a fever, diarrhea or a new or unexplained rash or cough.
- Requiring greater care and attention than can be provided without compromising the care of the other children in the program.
- Having or displaying any other illness or symptom the staff member knows or believes may indicate that the child poses a health risk to persons on the program premises.
Smoking, Vaping
- No smoking and/or vaping on the premises or at any time or place where child care is being provided.
- Do not leave any substances or material related to smoking or vaping in a place on the program premises that is accessible to children or at any other location where child care is being provided.
Manner of feeding
- Ensuring children are fed is appropriate to their age and level of development children are seated while eating and seated or standing still while drinking.
- No beverages are provided to children during their rest periods.
Outdoor play space for daycare
- Ensure that the outdoor play space used for daycare is securely enclosed on all sides.
- All entrances to and exits from the outdoor play space that do not lead into the interior of the program premises are kept closed at all times while children receiving day care are using the outdoor play space.
